Soil Carbon Sequestration

Soil organic matter is 57% carbon by weight. By increasing the organic matter of soils in all farming systems we can greatly reduce the carbon that is now being blamed for global warming. But eqaully important is the enormously beneficial affect this will have on the sustainability of food growing. Farmers could be paid in carbon credits for increasing organic matter, as well as enjoying the great benefits this gives to agriculture.

Bio-char
Early century discovery of rich man made soils in the Amazon basin has recently made headlines. The process of building rich soils by adding charcoal is the process. The result? Rich fertile soils and carbon sequestation of up to 250 tonnes per hectare (2.5 times as much as in the same soils without charcoal addition). You will hear more about this!

This is a great introduction to the use of increasing farm soil organic matter to sequestrate carbon. It covers the basic principles and goes into the historic poor affect of ploughing and the encouraging affect of minimal tillage to increase organic matter in soil. Good one to have a quick read of to start you of on the subject.

A start up company that has been investigating the business potential for carbon sequestation and building soil. Based mainly on charcoal and the use of "bio-char". Have a look at teh front page experiment picture and also the flash animation about the Eprida cycle.
